Leave of Absence is a sandbox game where work, as it always is, is boring – and you are too. So boring that it’s driving you insane and, logically, your only choice is to injure yourself so badly that you can get a doctor’s note to get out of work. Burn your house down, poison your food and find original, wacky ways to keep your boss from catching onto your daily shenanigans.

This is a game that was made during a school project over the course of one semester of school. I was one of three programmers on a team of nine people. The end result is what we consider to be a well polished vertical slice that has a decent amount of content, and serves as proof that the idea could be taken much further if we were to spend more time on it.

The piece of my work I am most proud of on this project is a modular state machine system I developed for the purpose of abstracting the behavior of a large amount of items whose only real common trait was being potentially harmful to the player, without having to copy-paste large amounts of code or limit the possibilities of what we could do. Once the system was up and running, it allowed for development of items and interactions in the game to go very quickly. I am currently working on retooling this modular state machine system to be a more generally usable tool, which I plan to release on the Unity asset store.
